Memories of the 2000’s
The new millennium brought the Major’s to a spiritual awakening and deepening of personal faith. The Jubilee year found me in St. Louis, Missouri to celebrate “Jubilee 2000” at a Charismatic Conference with Catholic and Christian denominations from all over the United States. Catholics were acknowledged for really knowing how to “Praise the Lord”. In addition, I also attended the Catholic Charismatic Conference’s and Men’s Conference’s at Franciscan University, Steubenville, heard Fr. Michael Scanlon and Scott Hahn speak, and a experienced first hand the Holy Spirit at work through Fr. Scanlon’s healing hands. The Holy Spirit continued to work in my life through participation in “Christ Renews His Parish”, Men’s Renewal program at Holy Family. Attendance at a subsequent healing Mass resulted in the experience of “Resting in the Spirit”. Your mother also recently experienced “Resting in the Spirit” through the healing touch of Dr. Nemeh at St. Ignatius High School.
Memorable events thus far in this decade included the following:
- Your sister Juliann’s graduation from Slippery Rock University and her relocation to Phoenix, where the two of you shared an apartment until she decided to relocate to Boise, ID.
- My grandson and your nephew Austin starting the first grade, learning to read, participating in sports activities such as T-ball and soccer and learning to ride a bicycle.
- Taking you, your sisters Juliann and Evette, and grandson Austin to your first drag racing event at Firebird Raceway in Phoenix, AZ and National Trailways Raceway in Columbus, OH. It was fun sharing your experience to the sounds and speed of top fuel dragsters/funny cars. Everyone was also able to talk to the Rod Centorbi, engine specialist, for Don Schumacher’s funny car team and witness the complete teardown and rebuild of the vehicle/engine in 45 minutes.
- Rock climbing, camping and viewing pictographs at Hueco Tanks, TX with Juliann.
- Taking a Caribbean cruise to Aruba, Barbados, Bonaire, Curacao, Granada and St. Lucia.
- Taking sailing lessons through the American Red Cross, getting instructions from a former tug boat captain for the Port of Cleveland, and obtaining a used Sunfish sailboat at no cost.
- Beginning a regiment of exercise to include distance running and participating in local running fund raising events to include 5K’s, 4 Milers, 10K’s, 10 Milers and Half-marathon relays. All of which will hopefully lead up to participating in half-marathon and marathon runs. As you know I’m not fast. At best, 9 to 11 minute miles. I tell everyone that I just do my turtle act – Slow and Steady.
What does the rest of this decade hold in store? I hope more of the same type of blessings, joys, and memories that have been experience in the past.
I have enjoyed participating in St. Mary-Basha’s celebration of the last 60 years by contributing some of my notable memories for each decade since 1940. The individuals who contributed to the parish history, Catholic Timeline, historical events and parish activities are to be commended for the terrific job.
