The Major household was jumpin’ throughout the 80’s:
Jill, Evette and Juliann continued in the family (Aaron, Biro, Major & Millin) tradition of utilizing their God given talent for music. Your great grandparents and grandparents played accordion, concertina, piano, and violin. Great grandmother Aaron had played in a philharmonic orchestra and for silent movies. All three daughters began with piano lessons and learned to play on the 1920’s Wurlitzer piano that Grandmother Aaron played for pleasure. School orchestras and marching band at Holy Family and Valley Forge (VF) High School had a significant impact on the daughters’ decisions to progress to other instruments. The girls could not find anyone to carry their piano into the school auditorium or onto the football field. Jill progressed from piano to clarinet and eventually to tenor sax; Evette progressed from piano to trumpet and French horn; and Juliann progressed from piano to flute and ultimately to percussion (cymbals).
You can’t imagine the joy it brings to a parents heart to see and hear your children use their talents.
Marching band was a blast. Activities included halftime performances at VF football games, band competitions, parades, building homecoming floats in the garage and having the house TP’d by the Jill, Evette and Juliann’s friends. While recently listening to an LP (long playing vinyl record) of Ohio State University Marching Band, I could not but remember the VF band director, Bob Anzaloni, and hear the VF band playing.
In addition to marching band, cheerleading aroused an interest for your sisters Evette and Juliann at Holy Family and Valley Forge High School. Activities included cheerleading camps, cheerleading competitions, car washes, and cheerleading at football and basketball games. Evette also became cheerleading coach at Holy Family after finishing high school.
Travel for the Major’s included trips to Clearwater/St. Petersburg for a Thanksgiving family reunion, Disney World and Niagara Falls.
Niagara Falls was awesome. The family took the Cave of the Winds excursion, walked the catwalks below Bridle Veil Falls in yellow ponchos. Standing in and below the falls, we experienced the sound (roar) and the power of the falls. The family also enjoyed the Laser light display of the American and Horseshoe falls at night.
On the home front, the Major’s celebrated First Communions (Evette and Juliann), Confirmations (Jill and Evette), Sweet Sixteen parties (Jill and Evette) and first Proms. Teaching Jill and Evette to drive was a memorable experience. I remember having my daughters do donuts in the snow at Nike Park and teaching them how to drive a stick shift transmission.
The Major’s closed the decade in memory of my father and Mom’s mother, your Grandfather Major and Grandmother Millin.
