Note: The books are listed in the order in which we will be reading them in class. These literature studies will be taught in addition to units on poetry and the American short story.
Language Arts Objectives:
The students will continue to use self-discipline skills in accordance with our Discipline With Purpose program. They will read a variety of genres and expand their understanding of literary elements. The students will also be expected to do outside reading in addition to the literature studies. Along with reading, the students will write using the 6 Traits Model, concentrating on content writing, a skill that is essential in high school and college. Included in this area will be an emphasis on vocabulary development and usage. In English, a working knowledge of grammar and usage will be stressed, along with comprehensive preparation for both the ITBS and the high school entrance exam.
Grading :
All grades will be based on a percentage, with test and project grades weighing more than homework, in-class assignments, and quizzes. Letter grades will be assigned according to the grading scale found in the student handbook. Conduct and effort grades will also be given. Every two weeks, parents will be notified through the Wednesday Communication Envelope (WCE) if their student has a D or F in the class. Progress Reports will be sent home mid-trimester, as well. Please look for these important forms.
General Classroom Expectations:
Students will respect God, themselves, and others. They are expected to contribute to the learning environment. Finally, students will follow all school rules and classroom procedures in accordance with the family handbook.
Accelerated Reader Program:
The Accelerated Reader Program (AR) is designed to promote reading on an individual basis for each student. Junior High students will work towards a goal of 100 points for the year, which is 33.3 per trimester. AR points will be included on the progress reports, so that parents can monitor their student’s development. The AR points will be averaged into the LA grade at the end of each trimester. The AR grade counts as only one test grade.
Final Note:
Please make sure your student has a place and time to do their homework, as they will have a minimum of 80 minutes each night. Even if their written work is completed, they will always have tests to study for and reading to do. Discuss projects, up-coming tests, and grades with them frequently. Watch the WCE for graded tests, 2-week notices, and progress reports. Also, teachers will write a note in the student’s agenda when a homework assignment is incomplete or missing. Finally, keep us informed about anything you feel we should know to be effective teachers for your student. We are here for them!
